Spring cleaning (with house pictures)

I know some of my Western friends are snowed in at the moment
but over here the snow is gone, and I am finally ready to face the new year.
I have been kicking off with a spring cleaning and redecorating.

We reorganized the living room - again (it's a tricky room, narrow with 4 doorways)
and put an add on one of those "Free stuff" groups on Facebook and got rid of
the old fat TV + station that's been collecting dust for months (in under 5 hours!).
I completely tossed my craft room, organized every single item and even made room
for my man's standing desk. The chaise-lounge was moved into the main bathroom
to make room for a small work desk for myself in the bedroom window nook.
Now all I need is a an old armchair to complete the look. (More pictures to come)

My house project list is as long as our cottage is old, and with every change
comes a new challenge. 150-year-old houses don't have enough storage space
for modern living, and any extra spaces are all weird nooks and crannies.
The rooms are very dark and the ceilings are low, making overhead lamps difficult.
I can count the furniture younger than 50 years on my one hand, since nothing
new fits, neither in style nor in size. Decorating is a never-ending labor of love.

I hope I'm not stressing anyone out with this post, I know I'm early.
I am very happy with how the redecorating has turned out so far
and it's really refreshing once one has mustered up the energy
and started ticking things off the list, but to get started - well...
I could probably call this the spring cleaning of 2014 = long overdue.

  1. I love the way you've decorated your place. It's how I'd like to do my house when we buy one eventually. It seems like every place I've ever lived in has been beige. XP

    1. Thank you! In Sweden everything is just white, I hate it. I hope to see some of your home decor soon.

  2. That purple throw pillow is a mean kind of spectacular-- I've never wanted a throw pillow more! Heheh.
Your decorating skills are immaculate-- I can't even manage to settle on how I want to decorate one room, let alone the house lol.

I hope to go through the rest of the house sooner then later, I've managed my creative laboratory and that's about it lol-- of course, it was pretty laborious on its own though.

    1. Thank you so much! Do you mean the one to the right in the first picture? There is a small chance I have another one of those pillow cases at the store - shall I have a look for you?

  3. I think it is really lovely you decided to start the year with a home clearing! As you said, it must be quite difficult to find suitable furniture for an old little cottage. Places like Ikea are experts in making stuff adapted to small storage space, but it would be a crime to decorate a cottage like that, wouldn´t it? The other option is getting things custom size done, but that can be quite pricey. It is obvious you are doing really well considering all these difficulties together!

    1. You know, the new stuff is all IKEA :) I am always on a tight budget so I can't splurge on custom things, unfortunately. It's funny you say their stuff is small - that's regular size in Sweden!

    2. Haha... You made a lovely job choosing the furniture then, because I did not realize it was Ikea at all (I always link the brand with their minimalist style, but I suppose they have different stuff too). Also, yes, I tend to consider their furniture small. In Spain houses and flats used to be quite big (although they are building small apartments now), so furniture used to be big too. I remember when I first entered an Ikea shop for the first time, I thought everything looked so tiny. My sister live in Tokyo and she always laugh at the Ikea proportions as they are considered big in Japan! (For instance, she lives in a 30 square meters apartment and that´s completely normal). Cultural difference is the beauty of life, I think!

  4. I'm right there with you, my friend. I started spring cleaning two weeks ago because I felt like I was drowning under stuff that no longer had any meaning to me. We need to tackle our basement and some of the stuff I took out of Mom's house because I was out of time to find them a home.

Your home is beautiful! I really like the corners and spaces in front of those big windows. :) Lovely.

I understand that your mother's lifetime of things aren't easy to go through, and not a small task. I hope you find some time soon.

  5. I really love the purple. I think I need to add some to my house as well. I've decided to add more colour back into my house this year. But I'm not quite ready for photos yet. I did clean up my basement (sewing studio) though. That was a big job! Your place is looking great. :)

    1. It's funny, I've always done things the other way around - I start with the accent color and go crazy. Then I tone down and remove over time, adding dark neutral where I can :)

  6. I'm not the only one! With our super El Niño winter, I have sloooowly started the purge!
It's time to part with trinkets that on,y hold memories for me, fling out the cloths I will never wear again in this lifetime, and live small and compact.
Well that's the plan, now to mustard the will!
You have provided inspiration and I love your home! xo

    1. Thank you, dear Debi!
I think the long tepid autumn/pre-winter never really got people to buckle down this time, maybe that's why many of us are already feeling like spring :)

I have been in a house-clearing mode since August.

    1. Gray is a favorite color of mine, second only to purple. The best interior decision I made was to paint the downstairs walls in that soft gray color, it made all the difference.

  9. Looks lovely. You know from my experience, new houses have as little storage space as the old ones.

  13. Oh my ... those throw pillows on your chaise there. The perfect colour for my upstairs Guest Bedroom slash Sewing slash Craft Room! After a year and a half, I've finally decided how I want that room to look, and the first project is a new velvet duvet cover that will probably end up looking a lot like yours now! LOL

    1. It's such a strange color - faded pinkish maroon, or: looked like purple in the store but not in daylight :) The velvet cover for our bed is a plum color nudging toward the same strangeness - I like it a lot.

  14. I love what you've done. I only wish my apartment looked that good right now, lol. We are hoping to make it a little more cohesive soon. Right now it's a kind of mishmash and we still don't have things completely unpacked and organized.

  16. Seeing the sun come through your window offers a delightful glimpse of spring to those of us who are still dancing with snow. Love the colors, love what you've done with the space you have. It seems your cat finds it quite enjoyable, too. :-D

  17. No no, all good! It's good to know what you are up to and I am always looking for decor inspiration, always trying to do subtle house personalisation things until I have a permanent home! And on a budge! I really love your lamp and all the purple! Fixing up rooms with four doors and places with no storage space sounds difficult! Let us know how it's going!
