Year without shopping - the end...

In January I embarked on a 4 step 'No Shopping' challenge:

1. During 2014 I will buy no clothes or fabric.
The only allowances are underwear and sandals for summer.

I stuck to this pretty adamantly, not even buying any summer sandals.
The only exception was the 3 day break I spent in San Fransisco with my man,
but since I only ended up spending 20 dollars I am pretty proud of myself.

2. I am going to shop my closet and fabric storage.
Between all the unused tops and dresses, and all the left-over fabric
I can probably make as many clothes as I would buy in a year.

I wrote these rules right after my man was deported and I thought
I was looking at many months alone. I have definitely shopped my closet
these 6 months, but I didn't sew as much as I thought I would.

3. I will get rid of some of the stuff I don't use
- throw out decade old clothes, upcycle, sell and donate.

I threw out some stuff at the beginning of the year when I started
sorting through my closet, but nothing really came of neither
my Blog Sale or donating stuff. I'm always thinking:
"What if I want to wear/upcycle this one day?"

4. I will start with no shopping for 6 months. In time for
Cinnamon man's birthday (July) I will make an assessment
and decide whether I will continue for the rest of the year.

Right after my tooth extraction at the beginning of July the store next door
pulled a '50% off' sale rack outside, and passing it I spotted the perfect
black lace dress. At that point I had been in pain and feeling sorry
for myself for a few days and I just couldn't muster up any resistance.
A week later, passing the same store, I spotted a soft black sweater
at 70% off, and I knew my 'no shopping' challenge had come to an end.

Please ignore my awkward posing...

Yes, even though I'm staying frugal the challenge is over,
and I'm giving myself allowances as the autumn clothes hit
the stores. It's one thing to keep from shopping in summertime
- but I am a sucker for knitwear!
Fabric and useless party dresses are still off limits though.

...and on an entirely different note:

Only 100 days to Halloween!

Have you begun the preparations?

  1. Congratulations! ^^ You know, that dress is worth giving up...;)

Well, finally, we live in a place where we can decorate and out out a lantern, so although I haven't started preparing yet, I'm looking forward to Halloween already. :)

    1. Oh, that's nice. I look forward to seeing pictures from your Halloween this year :)

  2. There is no way I could have let that dress go! I think having a few nice things is ok, while staying frugal! There as some things too nice and cheap to give up!

    1. I agree. I just think I stopped appreciating the things I already had. These months have changed that.

  3. Yay 100 days to Halloween! Yes I've started my prep...LOL!
I typically shop at thrift stores rather than regular stores as I find much neater things and spend way less. Of course there are somethings one can never find and others one just doesn't buy used (i.e. underwear!) but I do enjoy it more than seeing all the stuff in stores that everyone else is also wearing.

    1. Sweden is not really a thrift shop (clothes) kind of country and what they have is rarely in my style unfortunately. Otherwise I love thrifting and visiting flea markets.

  4. So sad to hear about your tooth pain. (I have an infected toe plus vertigo for 7 weeks and am feeling pretty sorry for myself too...) I hope you'll be better soon. I love the lace dress and top you bought for yourself. You can't do much better than 50% off -- you did great for 6 mos. and should treat yourself a bit. :)

    1. Yeah, I pulled two wisdom teeth but they healed pretty fast and I'm all good now.

I'm sorry to hear about your difficulties and I hope you feel better soon!

    1. I know, aren't they just? I haven't had a chance to wear the dress yet, since it's been 30 degrees - but come this autumn I'm gonna be a sexy lacey momma ;)

  6. Only one shopping day in all those months is already a big achievement.

  7. I think you've done wonderfully... That sweater would have broken the will of most mortals, lol! If they had it in red, I might have hurt a few people for it before running away cackling (with the sweating in hand, of course).

I've been definitely been preparing for Halloween... mentally. ;-D

    1. Haha, thank you! It's hard to come by red clothes in Sweden actually, but I could totally see it on you.

  8. You did amazingly!!! I am so impressed! I don't think I could do it, especially not with autumn coming. I certainly understand the need to do autumnal shopping! But yes, have to agree with Magaly above me, that sweater and that dress look soooo babelicious on you :P

    1. Oooh, babelicious..?! Thank you , that really made my day. I will have to have another glass of red wine now, and bask in the compliment :)

  9. You did amazing job not shopping for so long! I certainly couldn't have done it. Both the dress and jumper and lovely, definitely worth it! I can't wait for Halloween, all the goodies that come in stores at that time of year I just can't resist ;)

    1. I am so jealous of anglo-saxon countries, how much Halloween stuff just fills the stores! We have nothing like it over here.

  10. The lovely dress & sweater are certainly good reasons to end the challenge ;)

  12. You know, I actually panicked when I saw your post title. I was thinking, "God, don't tell me it's actually been a whole year since the beginning of the challenge!" Phew! You would have been crazy to pass up those two lovely outfits, so enjoy!! :)

  14. You've done really well to last this long, those new outfits are perfect on you :)

Not long for Halloween then! I bet your pumpkin plants are thriving ;)

    1. Thank you so much!

I was late planting this year, so even though they are thriving they haven't set fruit yet.

  15. I think you did really well! I only really feel the need to shop in the autumn and winter, when the boots and black things are in. :)

  16. Both pullover and dress look great on you! I think that conscious shopping is better than depriving yourself in the end. I try to do my shopping second hand and to keep the reins strict but not too strict...

    1. I agree, and that's what I feel I will do now. I just needed a few "white months" first :)

  17. That's a huge achievement! Congratulations! I think you have got a huge will power, your success on this challenge is proof enough. Plus, you made a healthy thing too: We are by far too obsessed with material good that most of the times we simply don't need. Good for you :-D

    SvaraRadera

    1. Thank you! I think it has some to do with will power, but also reaching a point of overload and fatigue. It didn't take much to keep from shopping these 6 months actually, I was just due a break :)

      Radera
  18. Ohhh, autumn clothes shopping is the best, in my opinion! So many velvet jackets to buy! And boots!!

    SvaraRadera
    Svar
    1. Exactly, velvet and boots are tied with knitwear :)

  20. Congrats for making it this long! That dress looks like it was made for you!
I have already started thinking about Halloween and what things I want to do this fall. There are some parks I want to go to.

    1. Thank you so much!

I know of only one park to go to for Halloween over here, I wish we had more.
