Supernatural thrillers - AB&AB

It's been a tough week. I threw my back out last weekend and my mom
had to manage the store for a few days. After the Halloween shenanigans
the reality of mine and Cinnamon man's situation caught up with me again,
and it's been really slow at the store. The only thing I have been up for
is reading in front of the fire and eating lots of Jul treats. On the other hand,
that means that A Book & A Blanket has been perfect for me.
And I've had some furry love accompanying me on the couch :)

This week I read two more Swedish suspense novels;
Sankta Psycho (The Asylum) by Johan Theorin and Stallo by Stefan Spjut.
The first one, though well written, was mostly just one long lead up
to a short and unsatisfying ending. If you want to pick up something
by Theorin I instead recommend Nattfåk (The Darkest Room).
It's dreary and suspenseful, with some nice supernatural elements.

Stallo though (same name in English) was pretty amazing.
It is not a quick read, with lots of descriptions and a somewhat
meandering opening sequence, but the book is suspenseful, imaginative,
gruesome and thrilling. It is not a fantasy novel per se, but the dark winter
landscape of the very north of Sweden, coupled with its stern inhabitants
and mythological creatures, make for an exotic read.
It also takes place around Jul, so this is the perfect time to pick it up!

Thank you Marfi for hosting this blog challenge,
it has certainly kicked my ass into reading gear :)

I am also hosting a small holiday blog challenge starting December 1st.
There will be holiday fun and giveaways! Click the image for more info.

  1. Oh no! I hope your back gets better soon.

Being laid up in bed is always the perfect time to get through a reading list.

Come over to my blog for a visit. I'm sure you'll have a pleasant surprise ;)

    1. I certainly did have a pleasant surprise, and I'm still high off it :)

  2. Sorry about your back. That's never fun. But you must be happy ensconced on the couch, surrounded by warm furry friends, reading, and eating yummy things. Looks good to me! :-)

    1. There is nothing quite like the purring love from furry babies crowded in your lap :)

  4. The Christmas challenge sounds really neat. I hope your back heals quickly. It's no fun, and it's sweet that the kitty is giving you the proper attention.

    1. Thank you, but there are actually two kitties in the picture :)

  5. Back issues are the worst! There's never a comfortable position - even on the couch! Although you do seem pretty darn cozy with that beautiful purple throw and your furry friend. Add the Jul treats and I might almost be willing to trade places with you! Almost ... ;o) I hope it feels better soon, Ms. Misantropia.

Adding Stallo to my Amazon wish list. Good Lord, that thing just keeps growing! I'm never gonna have enough money to get all those books! :o)

    1. Oh, an Amazon wish list, huh? That's a good idea, because I'm the opposite. I never write any of the books I think look interesting down, so when I'm at the store or library I just stare at the shelves, having no idea what to get...

  6. I hope you feel better!

You little description of Stallo already has me itching to read it! I'll have to see if we have it in stock at my store. Have you read Night Film by Marish Pessel? It is a rally strange and wonderful thriller... I think you'd like it!

  7. Aw, I hope you feel a little better now, both physically and mentally; the nights spent by reading by the fire or a candle wrapped up in a blanket make wonders to my psyche. :)

Is suspense a populat style in Sweden? A friend of mine has a collection of Swedish novels and there are a bunch of suspense novels amongst them so I figured it must be either populat or something Swedes are simply too good at...:)

    1. Thank you Lynoire, and I'm thrilled to hear you are joining in the Jul challenge - I would love to see how you guys celebrate :)

Yes, Swedes are big on crime, psychology and suspense, and many of our authors are popular abroad. There has also been an upswing in filming our stories lately, I guess we are "exotic" ;)

  8. Hoping you feel better soon. I know it helps me to have purring kitties snuggled against me when I am not feeling well.
I am sorry things have not worked out yet with the other situation, but do not give up. There will be a solution.

  9. Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about your back and that you've been feeling down. I'm hoping so hard that everything gets sorted out for you and your Cinnamon man. A book, a blanket and a furry companion sounds lovely though. :)

  10. oh no! I hope you feel better soon. Rest is good but you'll be back on your feet in no time. I had the flu recently and only started feeling better at the end when I was actually able to walk around a bit and do a few things. I've been reading a lot too! I am almost finished the Night Circus which is a gorgeous novel!

    1. The flu can be the worst, I'm glad you're feeling better.
I've heard that the Night Circus has a wonderful setting and atmosphere, but is lacking in characters and plot..?

  11. Heal soonest! My thoughts are with you & Cinnamon Man :/

    SvaraRadera
  12. Oh you!! So sorry about your back. But good reads and cozy times hoepfully make the healing better.

I need to email with you, as I have some magic seeds for you. I collected them just for you ;)

Hope you feel better! Warmest, Vanessa

ps: When you feel better email me and I will get your address so I can mail them to you ;)
