It's been a tough week. I threw my back out last weekend and my mom
had to manage the store for a few days. After the Halloween shenanigans
the reality of mine and Cinnamon man's situation caught up with me again,
and it's been really slow at the store. The only thing I have been up for
is reading in front of the fire and eating lots of Jul treats. On the other hand,
that means that A Book & A Blanket has been perfect for me.
And I've had some furry love accompanying me on the couch :)
This week I read two more Swedish suspense novels;
Sankta Psycho (The Asylum) by Johan Theorin and Stallo by Stefan Spjut.
The first one, though well written, was mostly just one long lead up
to a short and unsatisfying ending. If you want to pick up something
by Theorin I instead recommend Nattfåk (The Darkest Room).
It's dreary and suspenseful, with some nice supernatural elements.
Stallo though (same name in English) was pretty amazing.
It is not a quick read, with lots of descriptions and a somewhat
meandering opening sequence, but the book is suspenseful, imaginative,
gruesome and thrilling. It is not a fantasy novel per se, but the dark winter
landscape of the very north of Sweden, coupled with its stern inhabitants
and mythological creatures, make for an exotic read.
It also takes place around Jul, so this is the perfect time to pick it up!
Thank you Marfi for hosting this blog challenge,
