So Good, So Dark - and GIVEAWAY winners!

I have been reading many wise and beautiful things about the dark lately,
all thanks to wonderful Magaly's All Hallow's Grim: So Good, So Dark.
Many have commented on the philosophical, social and figurative meanings
and implications of darkness, but I have found myself thinking a lot about
the actual dark - the absence of light; The Night.

I have a life long love affair with darkness.
Ever since I can remember, I have preferred night time.
As a child I stayed up late, watching scary movies. My creative juices
couldn't flow during daytime. Sunlight hurt my eyes and made me cranky.

6 years ago I moved out into the country side, alone. Far away from street lights,
traffic and busy people. When winter arrived, the nights (and days) were longer
and darker than any I had ever known before. For the first time in my life
I was completely alone in pitch blackness. The few times the power went out
the world disappeared. And something inside me finally went silent, and calm.

Every time I go outside to call the cats at night, I am reminded of my choice
- the best one I ever made. The sounds of the night animals, the cold, still air.
The city as only a faint light on the horizon, the sky full of stars. And the moon!
Like nothing you've ever seen. My eyes can rest, as can my mind.
Out here I am protected from the world and I feel free. I am safe in the dark.

Thank you to Magaly for hosting this lovely party!

    1. Thank you. It's a question of priorities, living like this.

  2. I've always lived in the "bush" as we call it up North. But I'm about ten minutes way from the closest city, and 5 from the closest town. I love where I live, my house steps out onto trees and swampland. I certainly understand the feeling of isolation and the weird comfort that brings.

  3. Oh, wow! My All Hallows' Grim festivities got cut short because we had storm damage here and lost phone and internet for a couple of days. Just trying to catch up now that we're connected again. What an awesome surprise! And I can't believe that both winners were Aussies too! :D Congrats to Shelle! Thank you so much, Ms Misantropia! I'll email you now! xo

  4. I feel safer, happier, and more inspired in the dark, too. There had to be a reason why I like you so much ;-D I miss my native country, my Dominican Republic's woods... fool of life that came to a livelier phase at night. One day, right? One day...

Congrats to Little Gothic Horror and Shelle. That is too hilarious! Australia must be feeling lucky today ;-D

    1. You know, I too lived in big cities when I was younger, thinking it had to be the way for me since I loved the night so much. But I was sorely mistaken - it only increased my anxiety.
But since you can write anywhere (?), I'm sure you'll find yourself somewhere dark and moody soon :)

  5. Congratulations winners! The darkness holds such softness.

  7. I live on the border between suburbia and rural farm country. I was just saying to my husband the other day how I hope this area stays the same for a long while, because I love the rolling hills and woody landscape out here. I'm only an hour away from big city museums and theaters and I can still take my kids outside on the patio at night and listen to owls hooting while we watch the stars.

    1. It sounds lovely, and yes - I hope it never changes either. We are 30 minutes from everything out here, but the city area grows quickly.

  8. Night and I have become good friends over the years.
I tend to get a lot more done then too.

Congratulations to Emma and Shelle on their win.

    Have a lovely week : )

    1. It's funny, around dusk I often experience a dip in energy, a listlessness. An hour later when the dark has enveloped me it's like someone switched on a light inside, and I embark on all kinds of projects :)

  9. Congratulations to the winners :D
And OMG that video was glorious to watch and feel. Even in the city, dancing alone under a full moon is most freeing and energising. So jealous of your beautiful dark solitude XXX

  10. Congratulations to the winners.
I fear I am late hopping around but these party posts are so wonderful I do not wish to miss them.
I also live somewhat in the country, someday I wish to move further out, and I do feel more secure here. I could never go back.
