10 monster movies of 2013 - MMM

Any horror buff will tell you that whether or not we believe that we will be
treated to top notch acting, scary as hell effects or innovative story-lines
(we rarely do) - there are just some movies we want, nay need, to see.

Cinnamon man jokes that any horror movie receiving a higher rating than
5 on imdb.com is considered a good horror movie, and there is some truth to that.
We rate on an different scale. We are thrill seekers and we thrive on monsters,
strange rituals, dark woods, bloody gore - even on erie music and irregular panting.

Personally, I dislike torture porn and sexualized violence, so I tend to stay away
from movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I really enjoy being scared
and I don't mind blood and gore - but I don't want to be offended.
I prefer supernatural and occult themes, and I love a solid mystery.

For my fourth May Monster Madness installment I am going with
the horror movie theme, and I have put together a short watch-list
of 10 monster movies coming out in 2013 that I need to see...

1. Mama - Spirit (viewed)
Jessica Chastain was the main reason to why I wanted to watch this.
I enjoyed the first half, but I would have preferred more of the scary
feral children than the overuse of the cgi-ghost, and the ending was lame.

2. Dark Skies - Aliens (viewed)
I'm not usually big on aliens, but Kerri Russel is on my radar
right now, thanks to the amazing TV series The Americans.
I really enjoyed this movie, even though we've seen it all before.

3. Only lovers left alive - Vampires
Tilda Swinton rocks, whatever she does. This seems to be more of a
sexy drama than a scary monster movie. So you won't hear me complaining ;)

4. Warm Bodies - Zombies
I don't expect this movie to blow me away, but sometimes a good
premise carries a long way - and the trailer is funny and cute.

5. Evil Dead - Demons
The trailer looked good and scary, but I've read some discouraging criticism
about the misogyny in this movie. Verdict: I won't be watching this in the cinema.

6. Carrie - Psycho-kinetic girl
A remake of a classic. I'm curious to see where they will take this in 2013,
and to see Julianne Moore in the role of Carrie's crazy religious mother.

7. Byzantium - Vampires
The premise sounds interesting, but I'm not really looking forward to yet
another movie with lots of shots of skimpily clad Gemma Arterton.

8. World War Z - Zombies
Survival flick, zombie apocalypse and Brad Pitt. That's all I know
about this movie, and it is quite enough for me to add it to my list :)

9. The Conjuring - Spirit
Another haunted house story, but Vera Farmiga is a favorite of mine,
and Patrick Wilson and Lili Taylor always do good work.

10. 7500 - Supernatural entity
Supernatural happenings on a plane, starring Ryan Kwanten from True Blood.
It is very likely this will be just as silly as any other movie set on a plane...

What movies are you looking forward to?

  4. Things take a long time to get here (Egypt) so it'll be a while until I see any of these -- like when they come on satellite TV! lol
I can't believe they're remaking Carrie. Can't they think of new exciting premises?
I love the poem in your banner, and I'm a new follower. :-)

    1. I know, it seems everything nowadays is just a remake of something done before.

  5. I agree, the ending of MAMA sucked. WARM BODIES wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing either. It had me laughing at some points.

  6. I definitely want to see the Tilda Swinton movie, and I think Warm Bodies might be cute, so I'll probably go see it too. I hadn't heard about the rest of these, so I'll wait for your reviews and THEN decide! :D

    1. Ok, I will try to remember to post my reviews when I've worked my way a ways down the list :)

  7. Really intriguing list - I hadn't heard of some of those and I will sticking them my 'to see' list. I'm with you, I don't like torture porn movies, I like ghosts and vampires and some good scares rather than something that will turn my stomach. I went to the cinema last night to see Star Trek, which is why I'm replying late, but there was a trailer for World War Z. I'm not sure I'd bother seeing it in the cinema, because it's apocalyptic stuff, which I'm not that much a fan of, but it did look from what I saw to have some great visuals and some decent characters.

    1. Yes, the visuals stood out for me too. But I'm not putting much hope to the story line.

  8. Only Lovers Left Alive sounds amazing! Why am I only just hearing about this now? I can't wait to see Warm Bodies, either! The book was great!
Awesome list! I'll be checking out a few of these!

    1. It's been flying under the radar I think, being a British indie movie. But I'm stoked!

  9. I REALLY want to watch Warm Bodies! The book was fantastic, but you know how they tend to ruin adaptations. So I'm not expecting the movie to blow my mind, but I really want it too!

    1. Oh, I did think it was based on a book but wasn't sure. Fantastic huh?

  10. I totally have Only Lovers Left Alive and Byzantium on my radar. The first because of Tom Hiddleston, I might be a little bit of a fan and oh my, the short teasers are amazing :), and the second because I always run to see vampire movies and I love Gemma Arteton. I also want to see Warm Bodies. However, I saw the trailer for World War Z when going to see Star Trek last night and have to say I was very underwhelmed. I hadn't heard of some of the others on your list, I shall have to look them up, thanks.

    1. Yes, I like Tom Hiddleston too. Have you seen the Wallander movies? It is set very close to where I live!
